FOOD JOURNAL – Upo with Shrimp, Crispbread and Emmental Cheese…

Pinoy food is the best! This Upo Dish is one fine example of Pinoy Cuisine that is actually healthy for you, unlike Lechon and Crispy Pata.
According to Wikipedia, Upo is actually a calabash or gourd, more specifically a Bottle Gourd – I will give you three guesses why its called that. And the first two don’t count.

The Upo was once grown more for its use as a water holder than as a food. A properly dried Upo, minus its innards, was used to store water by some ancient cultures.

I also heard that a dried Upo can be used as a Pipe. Some have even conjectured that Sherlock Holmes sported a Calabash Pipe although his creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, never specifically mentioned it. Funky.

And with the trend going against the use of plastic maybe one day in the future, we’ll all go back to using Upos instead of plastic bottles for our water…

…and Tobacco…. :)

But always remember, smoking brings death and bad breath, not necessarily in that order!
