FOOD JOURNAL – How I Tweak the Dukan Diet to Make it More Filipino

FOOD JOURNAL - Dukan Galette, Gourmet Daing, Plain Yogurt, Grapes and Coffee

FOOD JOURNAL – Because the Dukan diet is very French, its can be challenging to follow it to a tee. But it is also a challenge to ‘Filipino-ize’ his diet and make it more convenient for a Pinay like me. One of my ‘Filipino-izations’ of Dr. Dukan’s Diet is Gourmet Daing which is not just a ‘Filipino-ization’ but also a breaking of Dukan’s taboo on Fat because Gourmet Daing is basically dried fish in oil and as we all know oil IS Pure Fat.

That is the main area where I disagree with Dr. Dukan. I believe his diet is too strict with Fats. IMHO, there is allowance for a bit more Fat, the healthy Omega type, in his diet.

While I’m not a doctor or a dietician, I am an ex-mildly-obese woman who successfully lost weight even with a good amount of Fat in her diet.

The kind of Fat I enjoyed while losing weight was from Full-Fat Yogurt, Full Cream Milk in my Coffee, Olive Oil, fat from Fish like Salmon and Tuna and even the bottled type swimming in Corn Oil like Gourmet Tuyo.

Occasionally, I would eat dark Chicken meat but always removed the skin first. And there were times when I would enjoy Curry which uses Coconut Milk – a food very high in Fat. To lessen the damage I would choose dry Curry dishes or avoid eating as much as I could of the Curry sauce.

The only downside to Tuyo and Daing is the salt content. I deal with that by drinking lots of water to flush it out, exercising to sweat it out and eating other low-sodium food to balance it out. At home we also cook with Pan Salt, a salt substitute.

So I have carefully tweaked Dr. Dukan’s Diet by ‘Filipino-izing’ it and being less strict with Fat and IT IS WORKING! I have been able to maintain my current weight of 137.5 lbs since mid-January (its now near the end of Feb). My original weight as of August last year (2011) was 170lbs.

Breakfast for today – Dukan Galette (sweetened with half a tsp of authentic Maple Syrup), Gourmet Daing, Plain Yogurt, Grapes and Coffee…

FOOD JOURNAL – Skipped Meals Because of Corona Virus

image

FOOD JOURNAL – Skipped a couple meals because of the Corona Virus… Not the one afflicting our Senate but a nasty gastro virus that got into our new Schnoodle Puppy Broyles.

Believing Broyles is being healed...

After Lunch at noon I had nothing to eat until 11 pm because of worry and a long visit to the vet after my evening newscast.

After a test confirming that Broyles indeed had the Corona Virus, whatever hunger I had quickly dissipated and I decided against grabbing dinner at a restaurant opting instead to get home fast to medicate Broyles.

Good news is : he is acting like he isn’t sick except for the frequent pooing. His are soft stools laced with blood. But Broyles continues to play without a care in the world. His Vet also says it is very good that our little sweetie is not throwing up. So far the prognosis is good…

Hoping that tomorrow brings complete healing from the Lord who loves ALL creatures great and small!

Dinner at 11 pm was a humble slab of Tamago with Kikkoman Toyo and Wasabe… Plus a prayer for our little Broyles!

FOOD JOURNAL - Lunch : Ground Chicken Sauteed in Tomato Peso Sauce and Coffee

FOOD JOURNAL – I am convinced that my major headache today was due to not having Coffee until lunchtime. I did not realize how deadly caffeine withdrawal symptoms were. Even my voice lacked power during recording this AM.

Anyway, by the time I finally got my Coffee fix the headache was not so bad.

Lunch was Ground Chicken Sauteed in Tomato Pesto Sauce and much needed Coffee…

FOOD JOURNAL – Today is Protein Day so no Fruits or Brown Carbs our Cheese.

Breakfast is Gourmet Daing, Scrambled Eggs, Yogurt and Teechino (a coffee replacement).

Late last night I had a snack – Bangus Pate, a slice of Cheese and BTIC No Sugar Added, Low Fat Yogurt Ice Cream. I went a little overboard with the BTIC though, lol! Thankfully its low calorie!

FOOD JOURNAL – Early Dinner: Chicken Sausages with Lo-Sugar Ketchup

FOOD JOURNAL - Chicken Sausages with Lo-Sugar Ketchup

FOOD JOURNAL – I bought these Chicken Sausages because it did not list Sugar or Nitrites in the ingredients. However, the sausages tasted a bit sweet so I think the manufacturer was either lying or forgot to put Sugar in the ingredients list. I ate them anyway because I was starving. But I won’t ever buy this product again. Had the Chicken Sausages Lo-Sugar Ketchup.

FOOD DISCOVERY – Zero Everything Rootbeer by Virgil’s!

image

FOOD DISCOVERY – While shopping for Sugar-free Chocolate at Healthy Options I found this WONDERFUL Rootbeer Brand called Virgil’s. Its sweetened with Stevia and has Zero Calories, yay! It doesn’t have the same sharp bite of regular Rootbeer, but its still a lovely drink!

Expensive at P105 so it’ll just be an occasional treat for me…

FOOD JOURNAL – Lunch: A Mushroom Omelet and a Shiitake Mushroom and Smoked Salmon Salad

FOOD JOURNAL - Lunch: A Mushroom Omelet and a Shiitake Mushroom and Smoked Salmon Salad

FOOD JOURNAL – Forced to spend more than I want to for Lunch because I forgot to prepare for baon today. Ordered delivery from Pancake House the most-UN-Pancake-like things I could find on the menu : A Mushroom Omelet and a  Shiitake Mushroom and Smoked Salmon Salad.

While I like the food at Pancake House, I find them over-priced and try to avoid eating there because of that. I don’t mind paying a pretty penny for my food if the quantity and quality satisfies. In the case of Pancake House, they suffer in the area of quantity.

FOOD JOURNAL – Ill Prepared with Food Today!

image

FOOD JOURNAL - Boiled Eggs and Coffee

FOOD JOURNAL – Made the mistake of falling asleep before organizing the baon list last last night. So I am ill-prepared today with very little food in my baon bag. I will have to buy food as I go around.

Thankfully, I found these boiled eggs at a 7-11… A perfect snack.

In case you are concerned about my cholesterol levels, my last test came out very good. Also, there have been recent studies that show eating lots of eggs doesn’t mean you’ll end up with a cholesterol problem. I eat eggs everyday, two to three on average and have never had cholesterol issues.

Time to get a-crackin’…  Bye!!!

FOOD JOURNAL – Recipe for Ground Turkey with Holy Basil / Breakfast Report

FOOD JOURNAL - Breakfast: Ground Turkey with Holy Basil, Scrambled Eggs, Yogurt and Pomegranate Seeds

FOOD JOURNAL – My Coffee was colder than a Dog’s nose by the time I got to the Breakfast table. It took us a long time to get out of bed today and so the food got cold but that’s okay. I am thankful for everything on my table – a sign of God’s provision!

Breakfast is Ground Turkey with Holy Basil, Scrambled Eggs, Yogurt, Pomegranate Seeds and Coffee!

The first time I came across Holy Basil was during lunch at a traveler’s inn in Chiang Rai, Thailand. It was a Chopped Chicken dish and it tasted fantastic! So when I saw Holy Basil Sauce being sold in Robinsons, I quickly grabbed bottle to replicate the dish I had in the mountains of Mae Salong in Chiang Rai.

Recipe for Ground Turkey with Holy Basil:

Ingredients:

Holy Basil Sauce, brand - Kanokwan

300g of ground turkey or any other ground meat. Lean is best.

Cooking Oil

5 Tablespoons of Holy Basil Sauce (I buy mine in the Asian corner of Robinson’s Super Market)

1) Heat cooking oil in a pan. I use only a tablespoon or I spray non-stick oil on the pan.

2) Add the Holy Basil Sauce (the brand I use is Kanokwan) and Sautee for a few seconds.

3) Add the ground meat and cook until done!
